CONCORD welcomes Commissioner Piebalgs approach to civil society

Posted on 2 December 2011

On 1 December, as the new Busan Partnership for effective development cooperation was being finalized, CONCORD representatives met with EU development Commissioner Andris Piebalgs in South Korea.

Andris-Piebalgs

We are pleased that the Commissioner has an open and constructive approach to civil society organisations, offering a future meeting with CONCORD to reflect on the new Busan Partnership. One of the key elements of the Busan Partnership is that civil society are recognized as independent actors in their own right.

For the first time ever, civil society was a full part of negotiations in Busan alongside governments and donors.

In the meeting with Commissioner Piebalgs we expressed our concern as European NGOs that we wanted to see the European Union and its Member States take a stronger lead in Busan. We now look forward to working with Commissioner Piebalgs for constructive talks on the new partnership.
